Restoration Exchange Omaha comes to Deer Park on Sunday!

DEER PARK TOUR
SUNDAY FROM NOON TO 5 P.M.

This year’s tour features early 20th century homes and buildings in Omaha’s Deer Park neighborhood bounded by Interstate 480, the Missouri River, Martha Street and Spring Lake Park. The tour will include the Vinton Street Commercial District.
Sites include:
1. Chops Bowling Alley, 2518 S. 13th St.
2. St. Patrick’s Church, 1404 Castelar St.
3. Meyer Residence, 1405 Vinton St.
4. Palleton, Inc, 1502-1504 Vinton St.
5. Ferguson Studio and Residence, 1701 Vinton St.
6. Emerging Terrain, 1717 Vinton St.
7. Hardware Building, Apartments and The Apollon, 1801 Vinton St.
8. Gallery 72, 1806 Vinton St.
9. Spring Lake Park Golf Clubhouse - 4020 Hoctor Blvd This stop will include a presentation by the Omaha Parks and Recreation department on the planned improvements for the park plus the only chance to sign up for great raffle prizes.
Attendees can view inside each of the buildings and talk with the owners of the properties and the people involved in the project restoration.
Attendees also are encouraged to walk or drive by other significant buildings in the area including:
 Duran Residence, 2402 S. 13th St.
 Louie M’s Burger Lust, 1718 Vinton St.
 Wiig Building, Capitol Bindery, 1810-1812 Vinton St.
 OFD #3 Fire Station and now residence, 3111 S. 20th St.
 Deer Hollow Park, 1801 Deer Park Road
Tickets are $10 each or two for $15. Purchase tickets for the self-guided tour in advance at http://www.restorationexchange.org or the day of the tour at Chops Bowling Alley. You are welcome to come anytime between noon and 5 p.m. to take the tour. Parking is available at Chops Bowling Alley, St. Patrick’s Church or on the south side of Bag N Save. You also can purchase a Restoration Exchange membership the day of the tour starting at $15 for students and $35 for individuals. Those purchasing a membership will get their tour ticket for free.

All proceeds support restoration and preservation educational efforts in the area. Thanks to AIA Omaha and Eyman Plumbing for helping to make the tour possible by underwriting part of the costs.

Rybin Plumbing and Heating Corporate Citizen of the Year Finalist

Congratulations to Jay Rybin on being one of the finalists for the Big O Corporate Citizen of the Year award sponsored by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Rybin Plumbing and Heating was a finalist along with ConAgra and Paypal. Way to go, Jay and crew!  Thank you to the Omaha Chamber for putting the video together.

It's been a while since we have posted but Oscar and I have been busy tending to the newest member of Deer Park: our baby boy!  I will do a little back tracking so everyone knows the amazing things that have happened in the neighborhood in the last few weeks.  Enjoy!

Vinton Street Creativity Festival

For the second year in a row, the Vinton Street Creativity Festival re-energized the historical Vinton Street Community.  There was never a dull moment in the day with all the bustling activity. Thank you Habitat for Humanity for all your contributions to the event.  Thank you Vinton Street merchants for sponsoring the amazing bands and performers on the stage.

We also got to welcome Vinton's newest resident, the Apollon, that weekend.  We are excited to have you in the neighborhood!

Duran Honored as Young Adult by Omaha Jaycees


Since 1933, the Omaha Jaycees has annually honored 10 people between the ages of 21 and 40 who demonstrate a commitment to community service and to personal and professional development. 
 
Oscar Duran
As a neighborhood revitalization specialist for Habitat for Humanity of Omaha, Duran is responsible for building relationships with community partners, establishing programming to maximize local neighborhood assets and cultivating new community leaders. A graduate of Omaha Creighton Prep, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and is pursuing his master's from UNO.
He has been a member of the Deer Park Neighborhood Association since 2007 and has served as the organization's president for two years. He is a board member of the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance, has served as the vice president since 2011 and was recognized as the alliance's South Omaha Volunteer of the Year in 2012. He is active in the South Omaha Violence and Prevention Partnership, serving as both the vice chairman and chairman since 2011, and in the Greater Omaha Neighborhood Center.

The 2012 TOYO (Ten Outstanding Young Omahans) Award recipients are: 
» Oscar Duran, neighborhood revitalization specialist, Habitat for Humanity of Omaha.
» Adrienne Fay, director of marketing, Borsheims Fine Jewelry.
» Dan Gilbert, special assistant to the senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, University of Nebraska at Omaha.
» Christian D. Gray, executive director, inCOMMON Community Development.
» Sarah Helvey, attorney, Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest.
» David Patterson, employee of Merck & Co. and adjunct professor, Midland University.
» Angie Schendt, editor, Woodmen of the World.
» Meagan Schnoor, environmental scientist, HDR Inc. \
» Angel Starks, educational director, Growing Hearts Collaborative.
» Erin E. Swanson, director of planned giving, Goodwill Industries Inc. 
The 80th annual presentation of the TOYO Awards will be Jan. 30 at CenturyLink Center Omaha. A cocktail reception will be held at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and program at 7 p.m.
